Kilimanjaro mountain guide Simon has already experienced a lot, but never before has he been entrusted with a group in which everyone thinks only of themselves: doctor Anna, paraplegic ex-athlete Tom, untrained teacher Joschka and his 25-year-old daughter Paula. They all have just one goal: they want to reach the summit. With their goal, the snow-covered Kilimanjaro, always in sight, none of them want to give up, because there is a lot at stake for everyone. Only when everything seems to be conspiring against the group do the four lone fighters learn that they can only make it to the summit together.

The captain of a ship of the merchant navy is always on the move because of his job – and has a different girlfriend in every harbour. But his friends think that he should change his way of life. Thus, they take the lovely reporter Eva on board for a trip to Leningrad. But at first, Eva′s presence causes a lot of upheaval on board.

Eberwein, Renate and Otto run a bar high above the Rhine, overlooking the romantic Lorelei. But no-one wants to climb high above the Rhine in these post-war days, and things look bleak for the future. However out of the blue Renate receives a letter to say that she has inherited an inn in Florence, and it seems their troiubles are over. They set off in their old car, and have to get towed most of the way, by a steam roller, a tractor, the carabinieri, and finally by a friendly priest. When they get to their inheritance, they find it is in worse shape than the bar they left behind. Renate goes round the banks to try to get a loan to do the place up, but without success. It looks like a case of out of the frying pan ... but there are two glimmers of light on the horizon; the first is that there is a large secret cavern behind the inn's cellar, containing unimagined possibilities; and the second is that the friendly priest has some money to lend them.

Maria has been living in a retirement home in Vienna for almost two years, but she is far from finished with life. She tries to break up the monotonous routine with creative ideas, much to the chagrin of the prickly home manager, who wants to manage her oldies with as little stress as possible. However, the residents are grateful for any change of pace, and former bar pianist Jakob in particular loves Maria's boisterous vitality. He keeps telling her about his East Prussian homeland and his childhood friend Paul, whom he lost sight of after the war.
